After receiving funding this year to run a pilot project, we are going to be offering a Nutrition For Learning snack program on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The snack bin will be out starting October 27th. This program is intended to provide healthy snacks during the school day for those students who for a number of reasons do not have access to nutritious food from home.
Nutrition for Learning is a community based charitable nutrition program committed to improving the learning capacity, health and well being of children and youth in Waterloo Region. Research has proven that students who are hungry at school do not perform well in the classroom, have difficulty concentrating, display behavioural problems, are less alert and are often lethargic. The NFL program impacts the physical, cognitive, behavioural and academic needs of children and youth in Waterloo Region.
Research also says that up to 10% of school children may be undernourished and could benefit from a school food program. We know that as with anything new, Silverheights students will be curious about the snack bins. We will talk to students about who the snacks are intended for to try to make sure that only students in need get the food . We would appreciate you talking with your children as well at home. We want the program to benefit those who really need it, not those who do not.
We are looking for a few volunteers to help with the program, so if you have time to volunteer to help out with the program let us know by calling the office at (519) 658 9023.
