Dear Parents/Guardians;

As you may have heard in the news, an 8 year old boy was injured after being struck by a car yesterday evening between 5-5:30 while crossing Guelph Ave near Milton Ave. The boy, a grade 3 Silverheights student, suffered some fairly serious injuries, but we are happy to report that he will be okay.

We would like to take this opportunity to ask you to help us remind your children of the importance of following bicycle and pedestrian safety rules. As we are sure you have noticed, the streets in our community and around our school are busy with cars, particularly at the beginning and end of the school day. Please join us in reminding your children to cross the street with the assistance of the safety patrols and at the proper crosswalks. In other circumstances, reminders to look both ways before crossing can never be reinforced too often and will help your children safely navigate their neighbourhood.

On the topic of student safety, we can’t stress enough the importance of only parking in designated areas when coming to Silverheights School. We are in the process of getting clearer signage to help with this. Stopping and/or parking out front of the school on Scott Road before or after school is not permitted. Our wheelchair parking spots must remain available for those who display the proper vehicle permit and require the use of those spots. We ask that parents park their vehicles along Poplar Road avoiding the ‘No Parking’ zones. Our staff parking lot and small day care parking lot does not accommodate all our staff vehicles, so we ask that you not park in those areas either.

We look forward to working together with you to ensure the safety of your children.

Sincerely,

Ms. C. Ogilvie-Interim Principal                                                  Mr. S. Sherlock-Vice Principal
